The severe weather pattern begins to ramp up today across the Northern Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes as conditions become increasingly favorable for the development of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs).

Over the next three days, multiple clusters of thunderstorms are expected to develop and track eastward across the region. These systems could become long-lived and produce widespread damaging straight-line winds, along with torrential rainfall, frequent lightning, and some large hail.

The potential exists for one of these organized thunderstorm complexes to become particularly intense and long-lived, raising the possibility of a derecho. However, the exact timing, location, and intensity of any potential derecho will depend on how the individual storm complexes organize over the next several days.

Some of these thunderstorm clusters may continue eastward across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, eventually crossing the Appalachians and reaching portions of the Mid-Atlantic. Once they move into the East, they could produce additional rounds of damaging winds and heavy rainfall, particularly if storms remain organized as they cross the mountains.

This is expected to be an active three-day period, with repeated thunderstorm complexes moving through the same general corridor. Areas that experience multiple rounds of storms could also face an increasing risk of localized flash flooding in addition to the wind threat.

Overall, the combination of a strong jet stream, favorable instability, and strengthening low-level winds is setting the stage for a potentially significant period of organized severe weather from the Northern Plains and Midwest into the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Appalachians, and Mid-Atlantic.

EXPLAIN WHAT IS A DERECHO

A derecho is a widespread, long-lived windstorm associated with a fast-moving line or cluster of severe thunderstorms. Unlike a tornado, which produces localized rotating winds, a derecho causes damaging straight-line winds over a very large area.

What makes a storm a derecho?

For meteorologists to classify a storm as a derecho, it generally must:

  • Produce a continuous swath of damaging wind reports extending at least 400 miles (about 650 km).

  • As thunderstorms mature, rain-cooled air rushes to the surface, creating powerful straight-line winds. When these downdrafts continually regenerate new storms along the leading edge, the system can maintain itself for hundreds of miles.

Why are derechos dangerous?

The greatest threat is widespread damaging winds, which can:

  • Snap or uproot thousands of trees.

  • Damage roofs, homes, barns, and commercial buildings.

  • Knock down power lines, causing widespread and prolonged outages.

  • Create hazardous travel conditions due to falling trees and debris.

  • Produce wind damage similar to that of a weak hurricane over a large region.

While damaging winds are the primary hazard, derechos can also produce:

  • Large hail

  • Torrential rainfall

  • Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning

  • Isolated tornadoes embedded within the line of storms

How fast do derechos move?

Derechos typically move at 40 to 70 mph, although some have traveled even faster. Because of their speed and size, they can affect multiple states in a matter of hours.
