EXCESSIVE HEAT IN THE SOUTHWEST

Dangerous heat will continue across the Desert Southwest today as a strong ridge of high pressure maintains its grip on the region. Afternoon temperatures will once again climb above 110°F across many lower-elevation communities, with Phoenix expected to reach 112–113°F. Some of the hottest desert locations in southeastern California and southwestern Arizona could even exceed 120°F.

The prolonged heat will create hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially during the afternoon and early evening when temperatures peak.

The excessive heat is expected to persist through the weekend with little overall change. Although the North American monsoon will continue to generate scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms, most of this activity will remain over the higher terrain and mountains. As a result, the desert valleys—including the Phoenix metropolitan area—are unlikely to receive significant rainfall or meaningful relief from the extreme heat.

Anyone planning outdoor activities should stay well hydrated, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned or shaded areas, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable individuals. With several consecutive days of extreme temperatures expected, the cumulative effects of the heat will continue to increase the risk of heat-related illnesses across the Desert Southwest.
