EXCESSIVE HEAT IN THE SOUTHWEST

Dangerous heat will continue across the Desert Southwest today as a strong ridge of high pressure remains firmly in place. The most intense heat will impact much of Arizona and the desert regions of southern Nevada, where afternoon temperatures will once again soar well into the 100s, with many locations exceeding 110°F.

These temperatures are several degrees above normal for late July and will create dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended periods outdoors. Once temperatures rise above 110°F, the risk of heat-related illnesses increases rapidly, especially during the afternoon when the heat is at its peak.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and seek air-conditioned environments whenever possible. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.

The excessive heat is expected to persist through the next several days, with little relief anticipated until the upper-level ridge begins to weaken. Until then, dangerous heat conditions will remain the primary weather concern across the Desert Southwest.
