Severe Weather Discussion

The primary severe weather threat today will be centered across western Kansas, where supercell thunderstorms are expected to develop as storms move east out of eastern Colorado. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, torrential rainfall, and a few tornadoes.

As the afternoon and evening progress, some of these storms may organize into a squall line that sweeps across western Kansas. Once the storms consolidate, damaging straight-line winds will become the primary hazard, although isolated tornadoes and large hail will remain possible with the stronger cells.

Elsewhere, scattered gusty thunderstorms are expected from the Carolinas westward into the Tennessee Valley. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few stronger storms could produce localized damaging wind gusts, heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and small hail.

Along the Texas Gulf Coast, Tropical Storm Bertha will continue to bring periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and isolated thunderstorms. The primary concern in this region will be localized flooding from persistent rainfall, especially near the coast and in areas where rain bands repeatedly move across the same locations.

Overall, the greatest severe weather threat today will be across western Kansas, while scattered strong thunderstorms continue across the Southeast and Tennessee Valley, and tropical rainfall remains the primary concern along the Texas Gulf Coast.
