EXCESSIVE HEAT IN THE SOUTHWEST

Dangerous heat will continue across the Desert Southwest today and tomorrow as a strong ridge of high pressure maintains its grip on the region. Afternoon temperatures will once again climb well into the 100s, with many lower-elevation locations exceeding 110°F.

The most intense heat will affect portions of Arizona, southern Nevada, and the desert regions of southeastern California, where prolonged exposure to these temperatures can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses.

With many schools now back in session across parts of the Southwest, extra precautions are warranted. Children are more susceptible to heat-related illness during outdoor activities, so schools, parents, and coaches should ensure students stay well hydrated, take frequent breaks, and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon. Evening temperatures will also remain unusually warm, offering little relief after sunset.

Anyone spending time outdoors should drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, seek shade or air-conditioned environments whenever possible, and avoid prolonged exposure during the peak heating hours.
