Our storm map highlights the primary severe weather threat shifting into the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday afternoon, with the greatest focus from Maryland and Virginia southward through the Carolinas.

Thunderstorms developing along and ahead of the advancing cold front will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, torrential rainfall, and frequent lightning. While damaging winds are expected to be the most widespread hazard, a few storms could become more organized.

One area to watch closely will be North Carolina, where atmospheric conditions may support rotating thunderstorms. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out if discrete storms develop ahead of the main line. However, based on the current forecast, the environment may be more favorable for large hail-producing thunderstorms, particularly across portions of the Carolinas where stronger updrafts are expected.

As the storms move east through the afternoon and evening, they may organize into broken lines or clusters capable of producing locally damaging winds and heavy downpours before moving offshore.
