Weekend Severe Weather Discussion

This weekend, we’ll be tracking the potential for a widespread severe weather outbreak across the central Plains and Midwest as a powerful storm system pushes into the region.

The greatest concentration of severe weather is expected from:

  • Kansas

  • Nebraska

  • Iowa

  • Northern Missouri

However, severe thunderstorms may occur anywhere from Minnesota southward into Texas through Tuesday as the cold front slowly advances eastward.

Thunderstorms in these areas will be capable of producing:

  • Damaging wind gusts

  • Large hail

  • Tornadoes

This setup appears favorable for multiple rounds of severe weather over several days, especially across the north-central Plains into portions of the Midwest.

At the same time, colder air diving south out of the Canadian Prairies—associated with the negative Arctic Oscillation—will also bring late-season snow into the Front Range Sunday night into Monday. Areas from Wyoming into the Denver area may see accumulating snow as colder air wraps into the western side of the storm system.

Bottom Line

  • Widespread severe weather outbreak expected this weekend into Tuesday

  • Highest threat from KS → NE → IA → northern MO

  • Severe weather possible from Minnesota to Texas

  • Main threats: tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds

  • Snow develops in the Rockies and Front Range Sunday night into Monday

Overall, this is shaping up to be a classic late-spring multi-hazard weather pattern, featuring both severe thunderstorms in the Plains and snow in the Rockies at the same time.
