Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Discussion

Heavy rain will impact a large part of the Plains today, extending from Texas northward into the Midwest. This is going to be a widespread rainfall event, with the potential for numerous areas of flash flooding as the remnants of Hurricane Polo continue moving through the region.

Some locations could receive four to five inches of rain, particularly where thunderstorms repeatedly develop over the same areas. With that much moisture available, we could see numerous flash flood warnings issued throughout the day.

Southwest and Colorado

Heavy rain will also continue across Colorado, while parts of northern Arizona could still experience additional heavy rainfall today. These areas have already dealt with significant rainfall recently, so additional precipitation could quickly produce runoff and renewed flooding problems.

Rain Expands Into the Midwest

As Polo's remnants continue moving northeastward, the heavy rain will spread farther into the Midwest. Areas around Chicago and the southern Great Lakes could see heavy rain tonight and tomorrow.

At the same time, additional moisture will expand across eastern Texas tomorrow, keeping the heavy-rain threat active across the southern Plains.

The Bottom Line

This is shaping up to be a very wet and potentially dangerous day across the Plains. Heavy rain will extend from Texas through the Central Plains and into the Midwest, with additional rainfall across Colorado and northern Arizona.

With some locations potentially receiving four to five inches of rain, flash flooding will be a major concern. Avoid flooded roadways and low-water crossings, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions as thunderstorms move through.
