4070 Storm Map: Coastal Storm Strengthens and Moves Into New Jersey
The obvious feature on today's storm map is the coastal storm developing along the East Coast. This remains a major concern, and the latest forecast continues to support a 4070-3 type of storm, with the potential for the system to strengthen further as it approaches the coast.
The forecast track has also become increasingly interesting. It now appears that the European model handled the storm's evolution better than the GFS, particularly with its earlier indication that the system would move farther west toward New Jersey. Current guidance now suggests the storm could move into or very near New Jersey Sunday morning before eventually pulling away.
That track would bring a significant increase in wind impacts along the coast.
Strong Winds From Long Island Through New Jersey
The strongest winds will likely extend from Long Island southward along the New Jersey coastline. The Jersey Shore is already dealing with substantial wave action, and additional strengthening of the storm could produce another round of dangerous surf, beach erosion, and coastal flooding.
Wind gusts could reach around 60 mph along the Jersey Shore, and I would not be surprised to see isolated gusts approaching 70 mph, particularly over the adjacent Atlantic waters and other exposed locations.
As the storm strengthens, its final classification could end up somewhere between a high Category 3 and potentially a low Category 4 on the 4070 Storm Scale, depending on the eventual wind field and storm intensity.
Storm Impacts Extend Well Inland
This will not simply be a coastal event.
Strong winds and periods of heavy rain will spread well inland, reaching central Pennsylvania, central Maryland, and Virginia. Winds should begin increasing across these areas Saturday as the storm circulation expands.
Farther north, New England will also experience strong winds and heavy rainfall, with the storm's influence extending from southern New England back toward Long Island.
New York City is likely to experience a very stormy weekend, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 50 mph, along with periods of heavy rain.
Coastal Concerns
The combination of strong winds, large waves, high tides, and an already-active surf pattern will create significant concerns along the coastline.
From Long Island through the New Jersey beaches, coastal flooding and beach erosion will remain important threats. The strongest winds will also generate additional wave action, potentially worsening conditions along vulnerable beaches and low-lying coastal areas.

This is becoming a significant East Coast storm, and the forecast has shifted toward a farther-west solution that brings the system into or near New Jersey Sunday morning.
