Severe Weather Discussion
Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop today from Pennsylvania southward through the Mid-Atlantic and into portions of Tennessee. The greatest concern will be across the Mid-Atlantic states, where thunderstorms may become severe during the afternoon and evening hours.
The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall. Heavy rain may become one of the most significant hazards, especially where thunderstorms repeatedly move over the same areas. Localized flash flooding could develop quickly in urban areas, low-lying locations, and places with poor drainage.
Another round of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected across the Mid-Atlantic tomorrow afternoon. Once again, damaging winds and very heavy rainfall will be the primary threats. Repeated rounds of thunderstorms may increase the flash flooding risk, particularly in areas that receive heavy rain today and are hit again tomorrow.
Farther southwest, additional thunderstorms are expected across portions of Texas and southern Oklahoma today. Some of these storms may become strong to severe, producing damaging wind gusts and torrential rainfall. Localized flooding may also occur where storms move slowly or repeatedly affect the same locations.
Overall, damaging winds and flash flooding will be the primary weather concerns today and tomorrow, with the Mid-Atlantic facing multiple rounds of potentially severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
