Severe Weather Discussion

A cold front will trigger scattered severe thunderstorms today from southern Virginia and North Carolina westward through the Tennessee Valley and the southern Ohio Valley. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, torrential rainfall, frequent lightning, and localized flooding. While an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, the primary threats in this region will be damaging winds and heavy rain.

The more significant severe weather threat will develop across eastern Montana into the Dakotas this afternoon and evening. Conditions will favor the development of supercell thunderstorms capable of producing very large hail, destructive straight-line winds, and strong tornadoes. Some storms may generate wind gusts in excess of 100 mph, resulting in significant damage to trees, power lines, and structures.

The severe weather threat will extend northward into southern Canada, including portions of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where supercell thunderstorms may also produce large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. Residents across the northern Plains and the Canadian Prairies should closely monitor weather conditions as this potentially significant severe weather event unfolds through the afternoon and evening.
