Storm Update

We’re tracking severe weather developing across western Texas today, and this may mark the beginning of a more active stretch for the Plains.

The jet stream pattern is becoming more stagnant, with troughs setting up across both the western and eastern parts of the country and high pressure centered in between. That setup favors repeated rounds of thunderstorms along the Plains over the next 10 days.

As a result, a corridor of severe weather is likely to develop from Texas north through the central Plains, with storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes at times.

This looks like a prolonged active pattern, so the Plains will likely remain a key area to watch through much of the next week and beyond.
