FLASH FLOODING
Updated by Henry Margusity

On today's storm map, the biggest concern will be heavy rainfall and flash flooding across the eastern United States, with particularly serious flooding potential across West Virginia.
Numerous heavy thunderstorms will develop and move through the region today. Some locations could receive 1 to 3 inches of rain in a relatively short period, with locally higher amounts possible where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same areas.
Given how saturated the ground already is, it will not take much additional rainfall to produce rapid rises on small streams and creeks. Urban and low-lying areas could also experience significant street flooding, while steep terrain across West Virginia increases the potential for water to rise quickly.
Some locations could experience serious flash flooding, particularly where the heaviest thunderstorms stall or repeatedly move across the same drainage basins. Anyone in flood-prone areas should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and should never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
Overall, flooding is the dominant threat today, with the combination of saturated ground, heavy thunderstorms, and locally intense rainfall creating the potential for dangerous flash flooding across portions of the East.
