Severe Weather Discussion
Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact the Northeast today and continue into tonight. The greatest threat appears to be across areas north of the Interstate 90 corridor, where thunderstorms may produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall. Some of these storms could remain strong into tomorrow as the unsettled pattern persists across the region.
Across the South and much of the western United States, scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms will develop in the warm, unstable air mass. While these storms are expected to be more isolated, some may become locally strong with gusty winds, intense rainfall, and frequent lightning.
The North American monsoon will continue to be active across the Southwest. Daily thunderstorms are expected from the desert Southwest into the Great Basin and the Rockies. These storms will be capable of producing strong outflow winds, blowing dust, torrential downpours, and localized flash flooding, especially in normally dry washes, slot canyons, and other flood-prone desert terrain.
Overall, the primary severe weather threat today will be across the Northeast, while scattered strong thunderstorms and an active monsoon pattern continue across the South and western United States.
