Severe Weather Discussion

Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact the Mid-Atlantic states today, with the primary threat extending from Virginia and Maryland northward into portions of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The strongest storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and locally torrential rainfall.

Heavy rainfall will be a significant concern, especially from portions of the Mid-Atlantic westward into West Virginia. Slow-moving storms or repeated rounds of thunderstorms may lead to localized flash flooding, particularly in urban areas, low-lying locations, and places with already saturated ground.

Farther west, additional heavy thunderstorms will extend from the Ohio Valley and Mid-Mississippi Valley back into the High Plains. This broad corridor may experience repeated rounds of heavy rainfall, creating additional flash flooding concerns where thunderstorms repeatedly track over the same areas.

A more organized severe weather threat will stretch from the Mid-Mississippi Valley westward through the Plains and High Plains, with the threat extending northward into southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. Thunderstorms developing within this corridor will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes.

Overall, today will feature multiple areas of active weather, with damaging winds and flash flooding the primary concerns across the Mid-Atlantic, while large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes threaten a broad corridor from the Mississippi Valley through the High Plains and into southern Canada.
