A dated forecast discussion from the WDS ops desk.

MORE HEAVY RAINS AND STORMS

Updated by Henry Margusity

Storm snowfall mapStorm Snowfall Map 1

Severe weather is expected to redevelop across the Plains today, particularly from Nebraska into Kansas, where another round of supercell thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon and evening. The strongest storms will be capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes, similar to the severe weather that occurred across the region yesterday.

Meanwhile, a large convective complex currently moving through Kansas and Missouri is expected to organize into a squall line and surge eastward through the day. This line of storms will track across portions of the Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley, and into the Tennessee Valley.

The primary threat with the squall line will be damaging straight-line winds, although isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Very heavy rainfall is expected to accompany the storms, particularly from Missouri and Kansas eastward into Kentucky, the Ozarks, and western Tennessee. Repeated heavy downpours may lead to flash flooding and localized flooding issues, especially in areas that have already received substantial rainfall.

By tomorrow, the entire storm system will shift farther east into the Appalachian region and the Mid-Atlantic. Thunderstorms are expected to develop from the Appalachian Mountains into portions of the Mid-Atlantic states, bringing the threat of damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding. Additional thunderstorms are also expected across the Tennessee Valley, where heavy downpours may continue to create flooding concerns.

Main Concerns

  • Supercell thunderstorms across Nebraska and Kansas today.

  • Large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes possible.

  • Squall line moving from Kansas and Missouri into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.

  • Heavy rainfall and flash flooding from Missouri and Kentucky into western Tennessee.

  • Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain shifting into the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic tomorrow.
